Production of the world’s Oil and Gas involves drilling and completing new wells. Every drilling program requires a drilling fluid to circulate, cool and lubricate the drill bit and bring cuttings to the surface. Every drilling fluid (“mud”) requires a certain weight to counteract downhole pressures. Every mud program incorporates a weight material, typically a carefully engineered powder, that is added to the oil- or water-based fluid system. A key job of the oilfield service (OFS) company’s supply chain function is to locate sources of weight minerals, acquire, and move them to the right place at the right time in the right quantities in the right packaging at the best possible total cost of ownership.
